IMPORTANT TIP
lnitial burn time...
* Let the wax melt close to the edge the first time you burn your emotive votive candle.
* This is especially important the first time you burn your emotive votive!
* This is because the size of the wax pool during the first burn determines the life of the candle. * Subsequent burns won't melt the wax beyond the initial wax pool.
* So if it didn't melt close enough to the edge of the candle, a thick, unused mantle could develop and the candle will 'tunnel' down into itself.
* This is referred to as 'tunnelling'.
* To prevent tunnelling in your emotive votive where the wax burns just down the centre, all you need to do is burn your candle long enough each time so that the entire top surface of wax is melted.
Scented candles such as my emotive votives are designed to create a sense of calming ambience which is key to rest and supporting skin beauty rituals such as my skin wizard Skin Glow Ritual GLAMWAM
I asked my fellow Industry expert to validate this for us, and here is her professional explanation. Lee Pycroft is a Professional Human Givens Psychotherapist.
stress
'The stress response is a generic system used to mobilise other systems in the body. It is not inherently negative and in short bursts can be beneficial to our immune system. It becomes chronic when it exceeds a person’s ability to cope and does not switch off. This causes havoc with the skin as the system of releasing chemicals to get ready to fight or flight directs energy away from process such as new cell synthesis and repair. The skin is always in a cycle of breakdown and healing and the impact of prolonged cortisol- which is a natural steroid can have- long term effect on the skin and its barrier function plus its ability to rejuvenate.’

breathe
‘The antidote to combat stress is to mobilise the relaxation response in the body as this will buffer against the damage caused when stress goes array. The quickest way to calm down is to perform the ‘physiological sigh’. This is a pattern of breathing that consists of two inhalations- 1 long and 1 short and a long exhale. This pattern of breathing inhales the most oxygen – and off loads the maximum carbon dioxide helping the body restore balance in around 3- 5 breaths.’

light
‘Our natural biology is set up to work with light and darkness. At night our body is a different place to during the day. Viewing morning sunlight around the time of sunrise energises us, and well as evening sunlight around time of sunset or near those times aids rest. Light is fundamental for instructing the brain when to be active and when to prepare for sleep. To help assist sleep avoid viewing bright lights, especially bright overhead lights between 10 pm and 4 am. Where possible, use side light or candle light that mimics the yellow and amber glowing tones associated with sunset.’

relax
‘Creating an environment that you feel calm, safe and secure in will help the body and mind to relax and meet the emotional need for safety and security. Burning candles has long been associated with rituals and meditation, making them a helpful aid to a relax. The smell of a scented candle stimulates the part of the brain which is connected to memory and mood and can be a potent way of help feel more emotionally balanced, manage stress and support a wind down sleep routine.’

sleep
'Good quality, deep sleep is fundamental to managing stress, and healing the body and not having enough will show on your skin. Go to sleep when you first start to feel sleepy as pushing through the feeling of being sleepy and going to sleep at a time that is late for you is a reason why some people wake up at 3am and can’t fall back to sleep. Create a calming wind down ritual with your cleansing routine and get ready to invite sleep in. Remember to Keep the room you sleep in cool and dark as your body needs to drop in temperature by 1-3 degrees to fall and stay asleep.’
